Getting Down To Business

My friend Sally is going on one of her vacations to Lake Chelan. She has graciously agreed to deliver some of my wine boxes to some of the best wineries for me.  You can't thank your friends enough! I'm so grateful!

As you may know by now, I love my bike......

and I seem to find ways to incorporate them into my art.

All of these pieces were found in a church in Paris. You can't believe the amount of stuff I collect for no other reason than I find them interesting.

How many people owned this key?

My favorite creations are my floor cloths. I love making them. Who doesn't want a great piece of art....even on the floor!

I am making several cloths that I will be posting on my etsy site. My shop is in desperate need of attention.

My photography is nothing to write home about. I was trying to do a close-up to show some texture.....do you see it?

Summer Distractions

I haven't created a thing in the last two weeks. I'm having too much fun having FUN! In Seattle you have to take full advantage of the sun and we have.

Hanging out with my favorite fisherman!

Maybe on the next rainy day I will get some work done......

Turtle Rescue

After a fairly quiet, peaceful Saturday my husband and I had the chance to rescue a snapping turtle that wandered into our neighborhood. We attempted to get him into a very large plastic bucket, one that you could use for toy storage or keg container. He successfully escaped into the back of the jeep. Thankfully a neighbor had a large pet carrier that Greg was able to wrangle him into. Luckily he did not lose any fingers during the process (I'm talking about Greg)!

This picture doesn't quite capture how large he was. Check out the nails. We took him to The Sarvey Wildlife Care Center up in Arlington. We were impressed with this place. http://www.sarveywildlife.org/. They were impressed with our find as well.

My pictures were taken with my phone, so not very clear but this was a snowy owl they were rehabbing.

He kept his back to us, camera shy!

I thought I was being clever, but he turned his head.

They went in to feed this bald eagle for us. This one is 17 years old and part of their educational program. Most animals are rehabbed and released back into the wild.

Incredible experience and no one was hurt in the process!

Hiatus

Took some time away from my blog, my etsy shop and anything technology. Almost forgot my password. It was a much needed time to refocus creatively and allow some new artistic creations to happen. Not ready to post any pictures but I am loving the space I'm in! On a different note entirely, my husband and I go on a pizza adventure every Friday night. We have been doing this for about a year now. We try a different restaurant every week to discover the best pizza. I have my top three winners.....

This is a tiny little place in the Phinney Ridge neighborhood. So cute and has outside seating. It makes you feel like you are surrounded by friends.

This pizza is delicious. My favorite is The Formaggi-mozzarella, Gorgonzola, provola and olive oil. The best part is you get free pizza during happy hour as long as you're drinking.....now that's happy!

Serious Pie is always a favorite. I have to admit, I am a stalker of Tom Douglas. He opens a restaurant......I am there!

My only advice.......you have to be adventurous and be willing to try some new flavors. If you want mediocre pepperoni....please stay away! This is the best (my opinion) Yukon Gold Potato, Rosemary and Pecorino (new comfort food)

Ristorante Paradiso in Kirkland made my list because it was such a find. We just happened to walk past the little gem and were lucky to get a table. Delicious is an understatement. The bread is an experience all on its own. Who knew that a little yeast and flour could be up there with great sex. Don't gasp, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
Ciao for today!

I'm a poet and didn't even know it!

A poet I am not but I have fun on www.bentlily.com  Please try it....you'll be surprised how good your poem is. Here is mine from earlier today.

YOUR PERSONALIZED INSTAPOEM BY BENTLILY.

It was the day we laughed so hard
we made the jasmine bloom

I was 5
it was sunny

we were running like giraffes
a game of hide n seek
happiness all balled up in our arms
shooting out of us in shrieks and bellows

I am a rabbit
she declared

and I decided I was too

a funny rabbit
with nothing to do
but chase the wind

they say it whips you in the face
but this isn’t how it works
if you run hard enough
the wind bores right into you

I don’t remember anything else
except the smell of the flowers
sweet as ice cream

the wind carried the rest away.

The Written Word

I was told once about the use of appropriate fonts for certain projects. I am very inappropriate..........I love creative fonts and I use them as much as possible. I don't pay too much attention to whether they are functional or not. I visited Anthropologie and fell in love with this chair.......ahhhh, the written word!

When Loves Collide

Two of my most favorite blogs have collided! Both are my daily dose of happiness and inspiration. I was thrilled when I went to the happiness blog to read the article with Danielle LaPorte. Both of these ladies write about what is inside of me, but I'm not a good enough writer to get it out. Lucky for me I can stalk both of them. Here is a look at the interview.

Danielle_laporte Happiness interview: Danielle LaPorte.
I heard about Danielle LaPorte several years ago, when I read a Domino magazine article about her work. I found her ideas so interesting that I got in touch with her, and over the years, I've gotten to know her better and better.
There's tremendous buzz around her latest book, which hits the shelves next week. The Fire Starter Sessions: A Soulful + Practical Guide to Creating Success on Your Own Terms is a terrific resource for anyone who wants to get clarity on what they want and how to get there. Passion and purpose! And making ideas real. These are Danielle's big themes.
Gretchen: What’s a simple activity that consistently makes you happier?
Danielle: Impromptu kitchen disco. (Note: cooking is not required, especially at my house. Just clear the floor, crank the tunes and get down ON it.)
What’s something you know now about happiness that you didn’t know when you were 18 years old?
Happiness is a choice. Often, some "rising above it" is required, or some rigorous re-framing of a perspective. But you can intentionally shift your psycho-spiritual gears into a genuine state of happiness.
The most profound thing I've figured out about happiness, is that it's the clearest indicator of deep wellness. I'm much less broody and moody than I was when I was in my twenties (one would hope so, right?) So happiness is, like, hipper to me than now than it used to be. I used to think that cheery, regularly happy people were too "lite," too...in denial of something. But I get now that happiness is the result of our core vitality and resilience. Peace is my new cool.
Is there anything you find yourself doing repeatedly that gets in the way of your happiness?
Other than staying up too late? Which I do. All the time.
Well, I'm pretty righteous when it comes to customer service—the cell phone rep, the waiter, the gum-poppin' cashier...I get inordinately peeved with lame service and get myself into a tizzy about how half the world needs to pull up their socks and be more polite. I could definitely lighten up and send some loving kindness instead of prickly posturing.
Is there a happiness mantra or motto that you’ve found very helpful? (e.g., I remind myself to “Be Gretchen.”) Or a happiness quotation that has struck you as particularly insightful? Or a particular book that has stayed with you?
Motto: My true nature is joy.
Quote: Turn as the earth and moon, circling what they love.—Rumi
Book: The Book of Awakening: Having the Life You Want by Being Present to the Life You Have by Mark Nepo
Is there anything that you see people around you doing or saying that adds a lot to their happiness, or detracts a lot from their happiness?
Happiness boosters: One of my dearest friends runs triathlons. She tells me the endorphins are like a bliss drug—and she proves that by being incredibly positive most of the time. I won't be doing any triathlons soon, but I can personally attest, as can my athletic and yoga-practicing friends, that moving your body is the surest way to feel better.
Happiness detractors: My heart breaks for people who obsess about the past. Chronically replaying how you got wronged is putting a fat wedge between you and true fulfillment. Face forward.
Have you always felt about the same level of happiness, or have you been through a period when you felt exceptionally happy or unhappy—if so, why? If you were unhappy, how did you become happier?
During some excruciatingly difficult times in my life, it came down to this declaration / mantra: I will do whatever it takes to be happy. That resolve and devotion opened my life up so much wider. The expansion wasn't entirely comfortable, of course. It meant I had to walk away from some things (brutal). It meant I had to find my edges, go to places I'd avoided, examine if my dreams were still the right size for my soul.
The learning brought me so much sweetness. I found new things—new theories, foods, cities, yoga poses, ideas, friends, new ways of seeing old friends, that brought me to new depths of happiness.
I made happiness the sacred priority. It worked.
Do you work on being happier? If so, how?
Always, every day, constantly. (Except when I'm happy being miserable.) I try not to work on being happy, as much as I try listen for it. It's usually there, chillin' out in my psyche, waiting for me to stop and takes its cues.
Have you ever been surprised that something you expected would make you very happy, didn’t—or vice versa?
I can hardly believe it, but our new guinea pigs are joy-balls. I had a strict no-rodent policy, but my eight-year-old son ran an impressive birthday campaign (I promise I'll love the guinea pigs forever and ever!) and we now have "Jack Black" and "Bruno Mars" in the house. They're smart. And soft. (Two of my favorite qualities in people.) We adore them.
As for things that I think would bring me great happiness, but wind up being less than incredible...I consistently convince myself that a new pair of shoes will revolutionize my entire life. The high of high heels is fleeting—but I'm committed to keep trying. Like I said, I will do whatever it takes to be happy.

Look and listen for Happiness. It is everywhere!
